GEPT Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary with an International Forum and a Tea Reception
The General English Proficiency Test (GEPT), developed and administered by the Language Training and Testing Center (LTTC), has served over ten million test-takers since its launch in 2000. For 25 years, the GEPT has accompanied learners of all ages in setting goals and making continuous progress. To mark this milestone, the LTTC is hosting a series of celebratory events, including an international forum, an awards tea reception, and public lectures. A dedicated anniversary website has also been established to invite the public to join this collective reflection on language learning and future directions.
Professor Hsin-Ying Li, CEO of the LTTC, states that the GEPT has long been a vital tool in English education in Taiwan—from promoting lifelong learning to supporting the government’s bilingual policy. The LTTC has consistently supported learners in their academic and professional journeys, while also assisting the education and business sectors in effective talent selection and development. In recent years, the LTTC has enhanced the quality of its tests and digital services. From “Dr. GEPT” to the “GEPT iPrep” online learning platform, integrated AI and data analytics offer personalized diagnostic feedback and help learners clearly identify their learning paths. Empirical studies over the years have also shown that, over the past 25 years, the GEPT has had a positive impact on both English learning outcomes and teaching practices in Taiwan.
Professor Li further notes that earlier this year, the LTTC collaborated with the National Development Council to launch the GEPT iPrep platform, offering free AI-powered diagnostic feedback on English learners’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To date, nearly 50,000 users have benefited from the platform. Users have reported that the interface is user-friendly and the AI feedback is practical, enhancing both their motivation and learning outcomes.

The GEPT 25th Anniversary series features three major in-person events:
- International Forum (June 11)
Held at The Residence in the Grand Hyatt Taipei, the forum was titled “Forum on Glocalization, Innovation, and the Path Forward in Language Assessment.” It brought together language assessment experts from the UK, USA, and Canada, to discuss the latest global trends in language testing and to explore future research and development directions for the GEPT. - GEPT Lifelong Learning Awards and Tea Reception (June 13)
Held at Cheng-Chiang Hall, National Taiwan University, this event honored outstanding learners who had progressed from the elementary to the advanced level and earned certificates for all four levels. It also recognized the longstanding support of partner schools and educators across Taiwan. Distinguished guests included Director General Yu-Chuan Li of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education, Ministry of Education, as well as internationally renowned language assessment scholars and GEPT advisors—Professor Micheline Chalhoub-Deville (University of North Carolina, USA), Professor Liying Cheng (Queen’s University, Canada), and Professor Lynda Taylor (University of Bedfordshire, UK)—all of whom joined in the celebration to deliver speeches or present awards. - Public Lecture Series (starting August)
Beginning in August, the LTTC will host a series of public talks across Taiwan focused on the use of AI in English learning and teaching. These lectures are open to the public and English teachers, offering insights into how humans and machines can co-learn and co-create, and showcasing practical applications of AI tools in language education. Registration details will be announced in early July—stay tuned! (https://gept25.lttc.org.tw/news)
