Dr. Robert Baird Holds Seminar on EMI Research and Implementation

在高等教育國際化的潮流下,臺灣各大學紛紛訂立各類計畫及獎勵辦法,鼓勵教師以英語教授專業科目。此一教學方式對學生的專業及英語能力發展有何種影響?學生們適應英語授課的心路歷程為何?為探討此一議題,本中心邀請英國University of Southampton學術英語教學專家Dr. Robert Baird舉辦學術英語教學講座,主題為《English-as-a-Medium-of-Instruction Research and Implementation: Qualitative Insights and Practical Considerations》。本演講於2014年5月22日下午2:30–4:00假臺灣大學應用力學館舉行,約50人參與,包含本中心測驗與教學專業同仁、大專校院相關領域研究生,及LTTC及各級學校英語教師。

Dr. Baird 認為,用固定理論架構來解釋EMI (English as a medium of instruction,即以英語為教學語言) 並不適合。因著情境不同,參與的教師、學生不同,EMI在實務上各有其面貌。Dr. Baird觀察、研究的EMI課程共同具備的條件包括: 以英語來評量,提供英語資源,且課程開放給非以當地語言為母語的學生參與等。在這樣的情境中,英語可說是一個共通的溝通工具 (English as a Lingua Franca),使不同語言背景的人士可以連結他們原生的文化、領域、觀點、專長,發展出此社群獨特的英語使用方式。透過質性描述,Dr. Baird呈現了台灣、中國、泰國的EMI情境中的語言使用實況和參與者的感受,以及這些經驗在專業知能及英語能力(特別是寫作能力)發展過程中扮演的角色。這些學生們的心路歷程,顯示了學習經驗、情境與自我認同之間複雜的互動關聯,因此各校在進行EMI教學規劃時,不可只著重知識傳授的層面,而忽略了「人」的因素。此一觀點,與會者咸認為值得深思,演講結束後並與Dr. Baird繼續熱烈討論。
